A working directory of the firms that run the world's boardrooms — McKinsey, BCG, Bain, Lazard, and the Tier 2 houses, Big Four advisory arms, systems integrators and M&A boutiques around them — and the AI capital now rewriting how the profession is staffed and priced. This is a first pass, built to be appended, not a finished census.
Management consulting was built on leverage: a small partner group standing on a large base of junior staff doing the research, modelling, and slide-building that generative AI now does in minutes. McKinsey is pulling headcount back toward roughly 40,000 after a hiring surge pushed it past 45,000, a reduction of close to 10% concentrated in junior research and back-office roles. Bain, BCG, Deloitte, and KPMG have each slowed hiring or cut advisory headcount through 2026. At the same time, in January 2026 McKinsey and AWS launched the Amazon McKinsey Group, pairing strategy with cloud infrastructure and outcome-based pricing for AI transformations — a sign the leading firms are racing to capture the value chain rather than resist it.
BCG now draws over 40% of revenue from AI and technology work, with BCG X — its build-and-design unit — growing roughly 25% year over year. Accenture is cutting staff who can't be retrained for AI-era delivery while it invests billions in AI-security capability. And the same private capital and AI-lab money now buying up accounting platforms is starting to circle advisory and M&A boutiques too. The AI-Native Challengers tier below tracks that frontier.
